Waimate Grain Silos Art

Commissioned by Barry Sadler of Transport Waimate the owner of the silos, the silo artwork captures four significant figures of the town's past. The order of the murals painted, and who is represented are as follows:

• Chief Te Huruhuru of Te Waimatemate Pa, and Michael Studholme, considered the "father of Waimate" who arrived in the area in 1854, depicted greeting with a traditional Maori hongi;

• Norman Kirk, the fourth Labour Prime Minister of New Zealand walking alongside Moana Priest, who was born in Waimate;

• Eric Batchelor, with nicknames 'the ferret' and the 'Waimate warrior' who was award the Distinguished Conduct Medal twice and was the only New Zealand soldier to be awarded the DCM; and

• Dr Margaret Cruickshank, the first female GP in New Zealand who served valiantly at the Waimate Hospital.

There are several information signs along walkways depicting the stories of these individuals, as well as of the silos themselves, which stand within an operational industrial site. These silos are one of the largest pieces of street art in New Zealand.
