The painting represents a reinterpretation of the Temperance card from the Tarot, adapted to the context of Benares. In the Tarot tradition, Temperance symbolizes balance, harmony, and the blending of opposites. These concepts are expressed here through the gesture of a woman mixing two waters, evoking transition, transformation, and the encounter of contrasting elements: life and death, ancient and modern, spiritual and earthly.
