Created for the 2017 Paradox Street Art Festival.

Combining his talents in graffiti, abstraction and photorealism, Askew One’s mural is representative of his artistic journey from graffiti to fine art. Graffiti-style lettering and bright abstract colour blocks intercept black and white portraits. Here he presents a portrait of the same subject from three different angles in an urban landscape.

Born in Auckland, Askew One started out in the city’s graffiti scene in the early 1990s, becoming an instrumental figure in New Zealand street art. He is one of Aotearoa’s most recognisable names on the international street art scene, responsible for organising Auckland’s first graffiti festival, setting up numerous gallery spaces and publishing both a magazine and book, showcasing New Zealand graffiti and street art.

Note that at the time these photos were taken the space in front of this mural was blocked off as a building site. I was granted special permission and provided an escort in order to take these photos. Please do not wander onto any restricted building sites without seeking the required permissions. Be safe.
