Cartoons for Big Kids

Location: Spring Street (large electrical box to left of carpark entrance)

Take a walk around all four sides of this work. Which characters do you recognise?

Artist Wongi Wilson says he aims to bring nostalgia and joy to ‘big kids’ - whether it’s the playful anime and comic characters or the recognisable faces from 1980s and 90s cartoons, he hopes the ‘feel good’ emotions will be hard to deny. Have a closer look and you will see Wongi has grouped the characters together according to colour, giving the viewer a changing colour-pop of surprise as they view each wall. From Snagglepuss to Hong Kong Phooey, street artist Wongi Wilson celebrates all things cartoon in this multi-sided mural.

Wongi's interest in graffiti developed at a young age and he has watched the art form grow from virtual non-existence to a blossoming creative influence across New Zealand. The versatility of his pop culture references, characters and photo-realism are all elements which make Wongi’s work unique and recognisable. Of Cartoons for Big Kids, he says, “I’m hoping it’ll appeal to a large age range and encourage the viewer to fully reminisce about their favourite childhood characters, as well as feel how they would have way back when.”
