Alex McLeod

Description

Located in the laneway next to Rydal House, 29 Grey Street

Created as part of the 2018 ‘Love our Laneways’ project.

“The theme for this event was ‘sustainability and identity’. The stylistic guidelines for the artists were urban jungle and combing 2D and 3D elements.

This mural is about renewable energy. Within the composition is a Taniwha warning against overuse of non-renewable sources. The whale is a significant icon featuring prominently in many local legends in particular the former pa site of Mangatawa.  His work is initially made up of familiar Tauranga landscape markers - Pāpāmoa Hills, the Kaimai Range and Mauao, represented as stylised triangular shapes. Then, as these maunga pull you round the corner further into the laneway, you’ll see the rest of his mural; bright and colourful, in the same triangular shape, linking McLeod’s work to the surrounding walls.
