Founder of realistic painting, politically active, he took an active part in the Paris Commune (1871) becoming director of the Fine Arts. Exiled to Switzerland, however, he still becomes quite successful throughout Europe. The Saint-Léger museum of Soissons displays a Landscape painted by Courbet in 1873.
