Ernest Claes zit genesteld tussen koekoeksbloemen en veenstro, zijn notitieboekje opengeslagen op zijn schoot en een vulpen achter zijn oor. Naast hem zit zijn vriend, de steenmarter (Floere het Fluwijn). Hij trekt aan zijn iconische pijp, waardoor ringen rook spiraalsgewijs de lucht in vliegen. Door de rookslierten fladderen een blauwborst en een grasmus voorbij. Dit kunstwerk is een harmonieuze mix van de inheemse flora en fauna van de regio en het historische culturele erfgoed.
