Sinchy Warmi: 'until all can be born with dignity', a mural created in Ecuador for the Nuevo Mural festival.
A few weeks before my trip, I was moved by a video showing a midwife teaching her son how to feel the baby in the womb of a pregnant woman. A week later, the Festival director Jairo wrote to me proposing that I change the location of my painting to Cotacachi. The new location was the setting for the video filmed by Wombs of the world, and the house belonged to the mother of the midwife filmed, Martha, who taught her the craft.
I don't believe in coincidences, I believe that the universe seeks ways to connect people and this was one of the most beautiful I've ever experienced.
In Kichua Sinchy Warmi means wise woman. And a wise woman is one who dedicates herself to listening and learning from others. I learned so much on this trip that it's hard to put it into words, so I hope it becomes visible through the painting itself.
