Erico Smit

Description

At the time Erico painted this artwork, he was the official city drawer for the city of Rotterdam. The theme he was given as city drawer, was "people and the city". But then corona hit and quarantine meant there was little interaction between people in the city.

Inspired by the idea of being tied to his house, he painted a series of portraits of his own son in different emotional states. He is tied to his home by the red ribbon, but what he really wants is to go outside and meet his friends and go to school.

The little building the painting is on, is a Turkish tea house. It is a place of meeting for the Turkish people living in the neighborhood. It opens up and the locals meet here to make snacks and drinks.
