Philharmonic Orchestra

Philharmonic Orchestra is a mural by Roy Karsky and Paul Watty, commissioned by the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra. The Orchestra is known for its performances at de Doelen, just a short distance from this wall. The mural is situated on the corner of West-Kruiskade and Diergaardesingel, in the Kruisplein. The architectural firm Meccano designed the building where the painting is.

In the top left corner, you can spot chief conductor Lahav Shani, along with other musicians from the Orchestra. At the top and spanning both sides of the wall (extending beyond the wall’s separation) is the Orchestra logo. The artists had to use mostly brushes and no spray paint. They faced restrictions imposed by the building’s owner, limiting the use of spray cans. During this period, the building faced some maintenance before the execution of the artwork, which highly influenced this decision.

Het Philharmonisch Orkest is een muurschildering van Roy Karsky en Paul Watty, in opdracht van het Rotterdams Philharmonisch Orkest. Het orkest staat bekend om zijn concerten in De Doelen, vlakbij deze muur. De muurschildering bevindt zich op de hoek van de West-Kruiskade en de Diergaardesingel, op het Kruisplein. Het gebouw waarin de muurschildering te zien is, is ontworpen door architectenbureau Meccano.

In de linkerbovenhoek is chef-dirigent Lahav Shani afgebeeld, samen met andere musici van het orkest. Bovenaan, over beide zijden van de muur (en zelfs iets verder dan de scheidingswand), staat het logo van het orkest. De kunstenaars moesten voornamelijk met penselen werken en mochten geen spuitbussen gebruiken. Ze werden geconfronteerd met beperkingen opgelegd door de eigenaar van het gebouw, die het gebruik van spuitbussen verbood. Tijdens de uitvoering van het kunstwerk vond er ook onderhoud aan het gebouw plaats, wat een grote invloed had op deze beslissing.
