Il Peso della Storia

Created by Argentinian artist JAZ (Franco Fasoli), Il Peso della Storia (The Weight of History) is one of the defining murals of the Big City Life project in Rome’s Tor Marancia neighborhood. As the first artwork created for this ambitious urban regeneration initiative, the mural introduced the vision of transforming a social housing estate into a permanent open-air museum where art, memory and community could come together.

The monumental composition depicts two wrestlers locked in a powerful physical struggle, with one figure carrying the other on his shoulders. Through this dramatic image, JAZ reflects on the weight of history and the invisible burdens carried by individuals and communities. The figures become a metaphor for the challenges faced by Tor Marancia’s residents, but also for their resilience, solidarity and determination to shape a better future.

Drawing on his fascination with wrestling, mythology and classical imagery, JAZ creates a scene that feels both ancient and contemporary. The expressive bodies and intense movement transform the building façade into a symbolic arena where stories of struggle, endurance and human connection unfold.
