Sarkanā

"Sarkanā" [The red lady] is located in Sarkandaugava and was created in the autumn of 2013 as the first large-scale street art in this part of Riga.
It is an 8x8 m woman's portrait in red is a tribute to the artist's girlfriend and is one of the most famous works by Dainis Rudens, which started a regeneration project of Riga's neighbourhoods and steered the discussions on street art in a positive direction. Before painting the mural, the artist got acquainted with the society living in this neighbourhood to find a suitable motif. While Sarkandaugava had a reputation as a grim and neglected area, the artist saw the romantic nature of it and used the bright reddish colors to lighten up the place.
