Trolls

The trolls are sculpted into the concrete abutments of a bridge that used to go between a low-income housing area and the North County Government Center. When the County Police facilities were expanded there, the bridge became an artifact of the past and is blocked on the police side. Because of this, the area gets very overgrown and doesn't get cleared up very much. On a recent Public Art bike ride, we detoured on a whim to see whether they were visible without having to crawl down into the gully (sun angle makes a difference as well) and found success - we don't guarantee that for future searchers! In order to see this, you have to go all the way into the development to the end of the road. When it was created in 1990, the artist used the likenesses of two (then) well-known Fairfax County public figures who were integral to the early development of public art in Reston for the faces of the trolls. They are delightful, with a wicked gleam in their eyes.
