L’opera rappresenta l’unica apparizione di San Giovanni Battista riconosciuta dalla Chiesa. Le due mani raffigurate sono quella del patrono e quella del contadino Giovanni Mele, che, tentato dal demonio, prova ad attraversare il fiume pur non sapendo nuotare. L’autore rivisita la scena in chiave contemporanea, denunciando il consumismo e il relativo danno ambientale. Nella parte alta dell’immagine è rappresentato il mondo spirituale, con la mano protesa per offrire aiuto, che indica la sfera della coscienza superiore, della Provvidenza divina.

The work represents the only apparition of Saint John the Baptist recognized by the Church. The two hands depicted are that of the patron saint and that of the farmer Giovanni Mele, who, tempted by the devil, tries to cross the river despite not knowing how to swim. The author revisits the scene in a contemporary key, denouncing consumerism and the related environmental damage. In the upper part of the image the spiritual world is represented, with the hand stretched out to offer help, which indicates the sphere of superior consciousness, of divine Providence.
