The Crystal Ship 2026 markeert de 10e verjaardag van het befaamde openbare kunstfestival van Oostende, dit jaar samengesteld door Matthias Schoenaerts, die werkt onder zijn artiestennaam Zenith. Voor deze jubileumeditie brengt Schoenaerts meer dan twintig nationale en internationale kunstenaars samen uit de graffiti, street art en hedendaagse schilderkunst – de drie disciplines die zijn eigen artistieke visie vormgeven. Van 30 maart tot en met 11 april 2026 transformeren deze kunstenaars Oostende tot een tijdelijk open atelier, waar ze nieuwe muurschilderingen creëren in de hele stad, terwijl inwoners en bezoekers het proces van dichtbij kunnen volgen.

De Portugese kunstenares Mariana Duarte Santos haalt de inspiratie voor haar muurschilderingen uit stilstaande beelden uit films en uit oude foto’s die ze op rommelmarkten en in antiekwinkels vindt. Deze elementen combineert ze vervolgens tot serene scènes waarin de mens centraal staat.

Met dit werk voor The Crystal Ship 2026 wilde Duarte Santos het gevoel uit haar kindertijd vastleggen waarin ze haar eerste passie - muziek - ontdekte. Ze focuste op de fase waarin ze zich volledig met muziek omringde, hele discografieën verslond, over haar helden las en haar favoriete bands tekende. Die nieuwsgierigheid werd uiteindelijk de bron van haar creativiteit.

Duarte Santos integreerde platenhoezen van onder meer David Bowie, Fleetwood Mac, Bruce Springsteen en The Rolling Stones in haar muurschildering. Hiermee beeldt ze de muziek uit waar ze van houdt, die zo’n groot deel van haar leven heeft uitgemaakt en die haar heeft gebracht waar ze nu is.

The Crystal Ship 2026 marks the 10th anniversary of Ostend’s renowned public art festival, curated this year by Matthias Schoenaerts, working under his artist name Zenith. For this milestone edition, Schoenaerts brings together more than twenty national and international artists from graffiti, street art and contemporary painting — the three disciplines that shape his own artistic vision. From 30 March to 11 April 2026, these artists will transform Ostend into a temporary open studio, creating new murals across the city while residents and visitors witness the process up close.

The Portuguese artist Mariana Duarte Santos draws inspiration for her murals from still images taken from films and old photographs she finds at flea markets and in antique shops. She then combines these elements to create serene scenes centred on the human figure.

With this work for The Crystal Ship 2026, Duarte Santos sought to capture the feeling from her childhood when she discovered her first passion – music. She focused on the phase in which she surrounded herself entirely with music, devoured entire discographies, read about her heroes and drew her favourite bands. That curiosity ultimately became the source of her creativity.

Duarte Santos incorporated album covers by artists such as David Bowie, Fleetwood Mac, Bruce Springsteen and The Rolling Stones into her mural. In doing so, she depicts the music she loves, which has been such a huge part of her life and which has brought her to where she is today.
