Street of a Thousand Colors

In Mons, Wallonia, merchants and local residents have painted the paving stones of the rue des Fripiers in all kinds of colours to make the street more attractive.

With a brush in hand, locals and traders painted the cobblestones of the rue des Fripiers in Mons or Mons in many different colours. The initiators received the green light from the city, and after a first failed attempt - the rain washed away the paint - the street can be admired in all its beauty since the beginning of August.

"We no longer call it the rue des Fripiers, but the confetti street or rainbow street," Françoise Charlier, initiator, told La Libre Belgique. She came up with the idea after two years of hindrance. "We've had a lot of works, dust and barricades. It was a difficult period for the traders. When the works were completed, I had the idea to make the street more visually appealing to attract people back here. In the end, it became a kind of citizens' project.'
