This artwork by the Belarusian artist Anita Familje brings out recognizable feelings. A woman is standing inside a dark room; and yet, her curls and clothes are bathed in a golden glow from the sun. She's trapped, isolated, just like the rest of the world during the many lockdowns over the last year. We want to open the window and go outside without feeling fear or possible danger. We are sometimes trapped not only physically, but also mentally. The artist knows this all too well; when she was married to an authoritarian husband, her own home was a prison cell. Like the character in the painting, she wanted to fly away and feel the winds of change. The butterfly pattern on the woman's clothing in this artwork symbolizes that inner urge for freedom.
