Sander Peli's recent explorations using watercolors have influenced the style of this artwork. Since the lockdown started last year, he has been going out every day to document the ever-changing world. Seemingly trivial elements show their beauty when you give them attention; in a sense, you rediscover the city. Peli's penchant for Art Nouveau and Art Deco helped him choose the subject of this artwork. De Rode Schaar, the building standing across the street from the electricity box on which his artwork is painted, is one of the few Art Nouveau buildings in Mechelen, but it also holds a personal significance for him: his wife had her wedding dress made here. By working out some elements in detail and quickly depicting others, Peli points out the otherwise almost invisible beauties of his subject in an extremely effective way.
