Don Antonio

On Friday, May 9, the Mayor of Los Realejos, Adolfo González, along with Tourism Councilor José David Cabrera and municipal technician Elena González, visited local artist Adán Pérez Farráis as he worked on a new large-scale mural in Realejo Alto. Located on a building along Avenida de Los Remedios, the mural is a municipal initiative paying tribute to Don Antonio Hernández Oliva — a beloved figure who served as parish priest at the Church of the Apostle Santiago for over thirty years and was named an Adopted Son of the town.

This artwork is also a celebration of the town’s rich traditions and devotional practices associated with the May Festivals. Though still in progress, the mural already features a portrait of Don Antonio, elements of festive fireworks, vibrant floral motifs, and a symbolic representation of the Virgin of Los Remedios — whose image appears delicately painted on a hat.

One of the most intricate features, still being developed, is a faithful depiction of the church’s Silver Cross, a revered symbol for the parish. Additional details are planned to emerge as the painting continues, gradually revealing the full scope of the tribute.

The mural not only honors a respected spiritual leader but also strengthens the town’s cultural identity through art in public space. The visit by local authorities underscores the importance of fostering community memory and artistic expression, particularly when tied to figures and traditions that hold deep emotional value for residents.
