Market Stamps

This incredible two-part mural is made by Barcelona-based artist duo Twee Muizen during the 'Street Art Takeover' organized by Writer's Block Murals in Leeuwarden. The artwork features numerous elements that refer to the rich history of the area.

Twee muizen: “Our work consists of two mural paintings, a diptych representation of the essence of old Dutch markets with our surrealist signature and characteristic color palette.

On the first wall, we see the serene face of a girl surrounded by flowers with a boat resting on her head, symbolizing trade and commercial activity. The girl represents innocence and the connection between past and present. The work contains floral elements typical of 17th-century Dutch trade in a contemporary style. In the other painting, we’ve interwoven the elements so that the result serves as a grand visual pattern: striped market awnings, boat sails, fish, Dutch architecture, flowers, and traditional ship biscuits. Both murals are framed as if they are two stamps, giving a nod to the post office that was once in that building.”
