Muurschildering uit juni 2022 voor Street Art Festival.

Deze monumentale mural van de Australische graffiti artiest Smug is met zijn 450 m² het grootste street art kunstwerk in Hasselt. Smug leverde een waar huzarenstukje af door enkel gebruik te maken van spuitbussen en hiermee een kunstwerk af te leveren dat zo gedetailleerd is dat het wel een foto lijkt. De vrouw op de muurschildering is een kennis van Smug en in het glasraam aan de rechterzijde zie je de hazelnoot, het symbool van Hasselt.

Sam Bates, zoals Smug in het dagelijks leven heet, staat bekend om zijn fotorealistische grote muurschilderingen. Geïnspireerd door de realistische kunstbeweging uit het midden van de 19e eeuw, gebruikt Smug foto's die hij zelf maakt als basis voor zijn creaties. Hij neemt deze foto's en herschept ze met ongelooflijke nauwkeurigheid, waarbij hij alleen spuitverf gebruikt. Zijn onderwerpen zijn meestal mensen uit de arbeidersklasse. Gewone mensen, die hij graag in groot formaat weergeeft in een poging om te benadrukken dat alle individuen op hun eigen manier buitengewoon zijn.

Wall painted in 2022 for Street Art Festival

This monumental mural by Australian graffiti artist Smug is the largest street art work in Hasselt, covering 450 m². Smug pulled off a remarkable feat by using only spray cans to create a work of art that is so detailed that it looks like a photograph. The woman in the mural is an acquaintance of Smug's, and in the stained-glass window on the right, you can see the hazelnut, the symbol of Hasselt.

Sam Bates, known as Smug in everyday life, is renowned for his photorealistic large-scale murals. Inspired by the realistic art movement of the mid-19th century, Smug uses photographs he takes himself as the basis for his creations. He takes these photographs and recreates them with incredible accuracy, using only spray paint. His subjects are mostly working-class people, ordinary people, whom he likes to depict in large format, in an attempt to emphasise that all individuals are extraordinary in their own way.
