The Suffrage Oak Tree

This mini-mural in Finneston celebrates The Suffrage Oak Tree, which is planted nearby in Kelvingrove Park.

The box was commissioned as part of Yardworks' Outside the Box project.

The image on the box shows an event for which no images exist: On 20th April 1918, a young oak tree was planted by representatives of the Glasgow Women's Suffrage Societies to mark the passing of the Representation of the People Act – which gave some women the right to Vote for the first time.

Activists like Louisa Lumsden, Eunice Murray, Frances Melville, and Chrystal Macmillan (all shown in the mural) were there, Louisa declaring that “The Vote is the door to everything, and the door is open”.

The box also shares quotes from each of the activists pictured, and nearer the tree trunk are images of British suffragettes planting trees in “Annie’s Arboretum”.
