Big Rachel

Commissioned by Yardworks GRID programme. The mural is inspired by two women from Partick: Big Rachel and Margaret Thompson. Rachel Hamilton was an Irish immigrant who lived in Partick during the 1800s. She was called ‘Big Rachel’ because of her height and strength. Margaret Thomson, used to run the ukulele club in the Partick Annexe. Everyone was given a red star at Margaret’s funeral, reproduced on the mural with the red star on the top.

The mural also includes bluebells, tulips, sunflowers, and a beanstalk. These plants are inspired by the local community garden (the Partick Community Growing Projects sits just behind the mural) and they were chosen by the Dreams and Aspirations group at Partick Community Annex.

This mural was painted over a mural from the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
