Domestic violence part 2

Artist Han Coussement was commissioned by Stad Gent to create an artwork for a campaign about domestic violence. This is what he has to say about it:

"This one focused on elderly abuse. We had a lot of conversations with victims, psychologists, doctors, care takers who gave their testimony about situations they experienced. All of them were so complex and different in a way but there was one thing that kept lingering in my mind. It happens at the moment when an older persons can’t take care of him or herself anymore and that responsibility falls on the shoulders of the children, family or people around them. Sometimes it is not possible for those people money wise or because they don’t have the time or it might be revenge from a kid on his parents.
The design is about that duality, the cloak is in a way protecting, keeping it warm and dry but around the neck it’s almost choking or strangling.
Apart from the heavy theme I also wanted to create an aesthetically good looking piece. Part of the inspiration for this piece was a canvas I made in 2018ish of a gang member with a balaclava. I always liked the rough lines and brush strokes in that painting and yet you still experience it as a piece of cloth or a tshirt wrapped around a head."
