For this edition of @fazunchar.pt we were asked to do a collaborative piece (@mariana95santos vs @regg.salgado ) about the Municipal Garden of Figueiró dos Vinhos. After researching its history, people’s daily lives and the garden’s importance to the town, we decided to pay tribute to a person who was much loved and remembered by the locals - gardener José Francisco Simões, who dedicated his entire life to the art of topiary, pruning the garden’s shrubs into the shapes of baskets, chickens, etc. From this starting point we created a surrealist scenario in which he populated the garden by sculpting people out of the bushes. We also brought other references from Figueiró dos Vinhos into this mural, namely José Malhoa (a small figure on the right painting the garden), as well as a sculpture by Simões de Almeida in the Museum and Art Center, which is born from the trees by the gardener’s hands.
