commissioned work
Many historic Essen railway stations disappeared from the scene during the bombing raids of the Second World War, or later in the demolition mania of the sixties and seventies. Fortunately not the Südbahnhof, which made it onto the city of Essen's list of monuments 30 years ago. The building, modelled on a suburban railway station in Berlin, has long since found a new use as a restaurant and pub. The station, which had been downgraded to a stopping point, was repeatedly criticised by the public for its uncleanliness.
