The Equestrian

This massive sculpture has a love/hate relationship with El Paso. Originally depicting and honor Don Juan de Onate, the controversy over some of the cruelty of his rule of the lands under his supervision created a bad feeling among many. As a symbol of colonial oppression, the statue has endured vandalism, particularly after George Floyd was murdered. For others, even many of Mexican American descent, the statue represents the exploring spirit and the desire the Spaniards had to bring their version of government and order to the Southwest. Don Onate is said to have given this city its name! It is difficult to find anyone completely indifferent to the work. It is not difficult to see the work as you arrive or leave the airport.
