Cormorant fish

"Elk vogeltje zingt zoals het gebekt is" (Every bird sings as it is supposed to sing) is a tribute to folk poet Jacob Cats, who said this 400 years ago.

The mural by artist Elvira van Bochove is a reference to the poems of Jacob Cats and shows a singing cormorant. However, this bird also has a fish tail. The roots of the Vogelbuurt neighborhood, on the Island of Dordrecht, lie in and around the water. The residents have their community in it. Elvira says: “The cormorant turns its tail into a kind of nest in which the little birds can be found. They are drawn by children from the neighborhood, who all help build the Vogelbuurt from their own background and nature."

The Vogelbuurt was a somewhat neglected neighborhood in Dordrecht. The Bird Art Project is an initiative of Het Vogelnest to stimulate social cohesion in the hood by making it more beautiful and thus making a positive contribution to the quality of life in the neighborhood.  Professional artists and amateurs (graffiti artists and students from Da Vinci College) worked together to make the neighborhood more beautiful and creative with bird art.  They have brightened up various facades of demolition and renovation flats in the Vogelbuurt with various types of birds.

Cormorant fish was painted by Elvira van Bochove for "Het Vogelnest".
