Just before Christmas 2023, this intriguing painting was unveiled on a blank wall surface of the angled side wall at Oosteinde, at the schoolyard of Jenaplan School De Oostpoort. The location was an obvious choice, as there was already an old painting here that has been replaced by the new one. The artwork shows a curious child peering through a microscope, highlighting the theme of “exploring and investigating”. In the artwork, the artist wanted to convey a sense of wonder and curiosity. What is in the specimen? What wonders of nature can you observe?

Not only relevant to the pupils, but also as a tribute to the seventeenth-century naturalist Antoni van Leeuwenhoek. The microscope, associated with Van Leeuwenhoek's name and discoveries, is particularly fitting in this location, where the famous researcher's birthplace once stood. The initiative for this mural came from the school itself, in collaboration with the Royal Dutch Society for Microbiology (KNVM). The artist Tim Rodermans, selected with the help of the KNVM, has created a fascinating connection between science and art with this work.

Vlak voor Kerstmis 2023 werd deze intrigerende schildering onthuld op een blind muurvlak van de geknikte zijgevel bij het Oosteinde, op het schoolplein van Jenaplanschool De Oostpoort. De locatie werd vanzelfsprekend gekozen, aangezien hier al een oude schildering aanwezig was die door de nieuwe is vervangen. Het kunstwerk toont een nieuwsgierig kind dat door een microscoop tuurt, waarmee het thema ‘verkennen en onderzoeken’ wordt belicht. In het kunstwerk wilde de artiest verwondering en nieuwsgierigheid naar voren laten komen. Wat zit er in het preparaat? Welke wonderen van de natuur kan je waarnemen?

Niet alleen relevant voor de leerlingen, maar ook als eerbetoon aan de zeventiende-eeuwse natuuronderzoeker Antoni van Leeuwenhoek. De microscoop, verbonden met Van Leeuwenhoeks naam en ontdekkingen, is bijzonder passend op deze locatie, waar ooit het geboortehuis van de beroemde onderzoeker stond. Het initiatief voor deze muurschildering komt van de school zelf, in samenwerking met de Koninklijke Nederlandse Vereniging voor Microbiologie. De kunstenaar Tim Rodermans, geselecteerd met hulp van de KNVM, heeft met dit werk een boeiende verbinding tussen wetenschap en kunst gecreëerd.
