This is a work about connection. The design tells the story of Montgomery's whakapapa, depicting his awa/river - Rakahuri, and his maunga - Maukatere, as well as the lush landscape, and the winds that blow from the mountains across the plains to the sea (Ki Uta Ki Tai).
The Sun - Te Rā, surveys the landscape, shining light on the importance of whakapapa and connection. The artist's name is embedded in the scene, connecting him to the places that have reared him and signifying the journey of discovery that has strengthened his ties to Ōtautahi.
