<div>In 2014 St+art came together as a platform to promote street art in India, because alternate platforms for contemporary art did not exist. The organisation wanted to take contemporary art out of the gallery spaces to the streets and in february they choose the Kannagi Nagar district in Chennai to start a huge project. One of the centerpieces is a huge black and white portrait of Chennai based artists <a href="https://www.instagram.com/ad57akill_t3k/?hl=nl">A-Kill</a>: ‘The sisters’.was based on a photograph taken in Chennai at Nachi Kuppam in marina beach. It inspired the artist to paint this was when Ihe visited Kannagi Nagar and saw a lot of children playing around and in everyday life. He loves greyscale and decided to paint it with a yellow background to give contrast and vibrance.&nbsp;<br><br></div>

<div>Project for St+art India<br><br>Artist Yessiow’s mural in Kannagi Nagar - the largest she has ever painted - is a message of deep love for India, and a celebration of all its aspects she has come to cherish.&nbsp;<br>&nbsp;<br>Having come to India for the third time as part of her travel journey, Yessi has stayed for almost a year owing to the pandemic. Her artwork in Kannagi Art District is inspired from the experiences and memories she has accumulated during her time here. Incorporating elements such as corals, algae and flowers that resonate with Kannagi’s demographic (comprising largely fisherfolk), the painting symbolises the kindness and hospitality of the local inhabitants.&nbsp;<br>&nbsp;<br>Referencing Kannagi Art District’s overarching theme of ‘People and Environment’, the artwork is an ode to India, its people and their warm, welcoming dispositions.</div>

<div>It’s a celebration of India’s unsung heroes who often toil for the county in harsh weather conditions without access to many protective equipments.<br><br>One Stroke adapted the mural from an image taken by young photographer @ranga_prasad_, centrally featuring a salt miner working at a salt pan in Marakkanam – a coastal panchayat town near Chennai and one of the largest salt producing regions in Tamil Nadu.<br><br>The piece’s monochrome colour palette was an artistic choice to highlight the hardships that often accompany salt farming including hard physical labour and constant exposure to harsh sun, while the technique of hyper realism seeks to centralise the salt farmer as the backbone of the state’s economy and its numerous communities&nbsp;<br><br>Festival supported by Asian Paints and Start India</div>
