Description

“NC 8,” a mural T'Afo and Abel Jackson created at the old A&P building in Charlotte’s Biddleville neighborhood. It honors legendary Black musicians with North Carolina roots, including George Clinton, Maceo Parker, Nina Simone, Roberta Flack, John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, Chuck Brown and Max Roach.

Each of these eight INCREDIBLE musicians has roots in NC.

Thelonius Monk - self-taught pianist, born in Rocky Mount
Nina Simone - pianist and singer-song writer (jazz and soul), born and raised in Tryon
John Coltrane - saxophonist (one of the most influential jazz musicians of all time), born in Hamlet and raised in High Point
Maceo Parker - saxophonist (played with James Brown and also has a solo career), born in Kinston⁣
Max Roach - drummer (started own record label and defined bepop style of drumming), born in Pasquotank County
Roberta Flack - singer/songwriter, born in Black Mtn
George Clinton - leader of the band Parliament Funkadelic, born in Kannapolis⁣
Chuck Brown - guitarist (“Godfather of Go Go”), born in Gaston
