PORTVS MAGNVM

Portus Magnum is the title I chose for this mural, which decorates the façade of Hotel Portan, located at the entrance of the village of Portmán. That’s where the name comes from: Portus Magnum (“Great Port”).

The whole mural is full of symbolism and colors that tell the story of the village, arranged more or less in historical order: it starts with a Roman bust, continues with mining elements, and ends with the sea.

The turquoise tones represent the color of the sea water and the oxidation of certain metals. The ochres resemble the rusty tones of mining, and the light browns reflect the minerals and soil of the surrounding mountains.

You’ll also find leaves and geometric shapes representing the mountainous area, oxidized textures, gears, a mining cart, wave shapes, corals, seaweed, a ship’s wheel, an octopus arm, and a seahorse — a very typical and symbolic animal of the Murcia coastline.

Portmán is a small village of about 1,000 people, but with a huge history: from Roman times, the war, the mining era, and iconic buildings like the Casa del Tío Lobo.

Now, this mural becomes part of that history — measuring 7 meters high by 41 meters wide on the hotel façade.

Portus Magnum es el título que he elegido para este mural que decora la fachada del Hotel Portan, situado en la entrada del pueblo de Portmán, de ahí su nombre: Portus Magnum (“Puerto Grande”).

Todo el mural está lleno de simbología y colores que representan la historia del pueblo, colocados en orden más o menos cronológico: empieza con un busto romano, sigue con elementos de la minería, y termina con el mar.

Los colores turquesas representan el color del agua del mar y el óxido de algunos metales. Los ocres recuerdan los tonos oxidados de la minería, y los marrones claros los minerales y las tierras de las montañas.

También aparecen hojas y formas geométricas por el entorno montañoso del pueblo, óxidos, engranajes, una vagoneta de mina, formas de olas, corales, algas, un timón, un brazo de pulpo y un caballito de mar, muy típico y simbólico del mar de Murcia.

Portmán es un pueblo pequeño, de unos 1.000 habitantes, pero con una historia enorme: desde los romanos, la guerra, la minería, hasta edificios como la Casa del Tío Lobo.

Ahora este mural forma parte del pueblo de Portman con unas dimensiones de: 7 metros de alto x 41 metros de ancho en fachada.
