Doors of Caïro

Vhils presents Doors of Cairo, a monumental installation constructed from reclaimed wooden doors collected across Cairo. Once part of homes, shops, and daily life, these weathered doors are assembled into a towering vertical structure supported by industrial scaffolding. Through his signature carving technique, Vhils etches human faces and ornamental motifs into the doors, evoking personal histories and shared identities. Positioned in the desert beside the pyramids, the work transforms from functional architecture into a symbolic threshold between past and present, prompting reflection on memory, loss, and continuity.

The project extends the artist’s long‑standing exploration of urban archaeology and the emotional resonance of discarded materials. Alongside the main installation, a smaller sculptural model of Doors of Cairo will also be unveiled, preserving the concept beyond its original site and offered for acquisition through the artist’s studio.
