RAINFOREST TRANQUILITY

Cairns Hospital Memorial Garden: Symbolising one of the darkest days in the hospital's history.

On 30 March 1995, radiology student Gregory Keith Prince went to Cairns Base Hospital and shot dead radiographer Lynnette Muller, 47, and her colleague Jack Carter, 36, before turning the gun on himself.

Approaching the 30-year anniversary of the tragedy, Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service is upgrading the small memorial garden and fountain that was originally next to the hospital’s Medical Imaging department. A beautiful rainforest mural, by local artist Daniel Wallwork, is being painted behind the fountain. The Hospital maintenance team are continuing upgrades to the water fountain.

Peter Muller, Lynnette’s husband, described the mural as a fitting addition to his wife’s memorial. “It’s an appropriate addition to remember such a terrible event that should have never occurred in a hospital, let alone this one,” Mr Muller said.

“This tragedy sent ripples through the Cairns community, and still does nearly 30 years on. It will help people remember what happened, and a reminder of what we have lost.”

Location: Ground Floor, in the main connecting corridor next to the Radiology Department. (Accessible to the public)
