Les danseuses de Bruxelles

This fresco takes you on a journey from Brussels to the municipalities of Laeken, Haren and Neder-Over-Heembeek. It is a poetic representation of our city. We can therefore see the typical architecture of Brussels, as well as the Japanese tower of Laeken, the Church of St. Elisabeth in Haren and the Romanesque tower of Neder-Over-Heembeek. The landscape is made up of some of the best-known landmarks of the historical heritage of Brussels.

The floating arrangement of all the elements suggests a feeling of lightness. As such, this painting more closely resembles a map. The architectural buildings release themselves from their original locations and merge into a new city. Thanks to this union, Brussels is able to undertake new projects and enrich its territory through a multitude of diverse landscapes.

These dancing women represent the fusion of these municipalities, the union between people. On each woman, we detect an element reminiscent of a municipality: a statuette of the Atomium, a dress with a “manneken-pis” pattern, the Neder-over-Heembeek football club “Black Star FC” logo, and a basket containing chicory.

The shapes which appear “liquid” in the background symbolise the canal which passes through and connects the different municipalities.
