The Saudi street artist Ms Saffaa @mssaffaa @muralsbymssaffaa who come to prominence through her ‘I am my own guardian’ @iammyownguardian has just delivered a thought provoking new wall.......
[Back Story via Muslima website: In Saudi Arabia, biology is destiny and gendered power relations are inescapable. Hierarchies of power in Saudi Arabia are fundamentally based on sexual difference and the female-male binary. The country’s guardianship laws explicitly discriminate against women on the basis of their sex. According to these laws, the life of a Saudi woman is fully in the hands of another person, a man, and her rights are left up to him, rather than the rule of law, to either uphold or deny. Such a system renders women invisible, ignored, voiceless, oppressed, and marginalized. It is, through the medium of art, that I peacefully exercise my right to civil disobedience. I Am My Own Guardian is a personal response to institutionalized patriarchy. It is a strike, a stance against injustice. My work represents the untold struggles of my Saudi sisters who suffer under this system. I am hopeful and optimistic that my work will provoke radical social transformation and open the door for new possibilities.]
