After taking part in the Blind Walls Talent Call 2025, artist Julia ‘Buuf’ Buur was given the opportunity to create a mural about Breda’s iconic Koepelgevangenis. Over the years, many extraordinary events took place there, including Tottie Kiel’s daring escape through a crawl space beneath the building. Using layered panels, shifting perspectives and the wall’s existing pillars, Buuf Buur created a disorienting, playful and highly distinctive work.
This Prison Escape mural tells the story of an escape from Breda’s infamous Koepelgevangenis, located just around the corner from this wall. The artwork is mainly inspired by the remarkable escape of Hulda ‘Tottie’ Kiel, who dug a tunnel, emerged through the pavement outside the prison, and fled in a getaway car.
The mural is divided into two worlds. Below the black central bar, the story unfolds inside and beneath the prison. Above it, the action moves outdoors, beyond the prison walls.
The storyline in short: prison cell, digging a tunnel, escape route through shaft, exit through sidewalk, air raid alarm goes off, getaway car, freedom.
