Ring around the Rosie

The mural is inspired by the Sint Joostkapel, located at the Ginnekenstraat. De 15th century chapel is build to honour Sint Joost (Saint Sebastian), the patron saint of plague victims. Residents sought for protection and forgiveness at the church during the plague. It was thought that the Black Death was a punishment from God. The cemetery was located at the location we now know as the parking area Mols. The cemetery was situated outside the city walls, the perfect place to burry the plague victims. After the plague the cemetery was used to burry the poor, orphans, soldiers and suicides.
