who, after he had destroyed holy Ilium,
saw the cities of many peoples
and learned their customs.
Many sufferings at sea he bore in his heart,
while he strove to save his own life
and to bring his comrades home.
Yet none of them he saved,
though he longed to.”

Following Circe’s instructions, Ulysses descends into the Underworld to consult Tiresias so that he may show him the way home. The seer foretells that, if the Greeks eat the sacred cattle of Helios, Ulysses will return to his homeland only after losing all his companions, and he will find Ithaca ruled by impostors.
