The mural draws inspiration from Ciaran Carson’s book Belfast Confetti. In particular Carsons inclusion of a public notice from the corporation of Belfast (1678) which highlights a growing problem of Butchers and Tanners mastiff dogs attacking livestock, people, and even young children in the city.

“Inhabitants ffeare their lives to walk the streets or laines either by night or day for the said dogs…”

Carson’s use of this notice was to draw a connection between Belfast in 1678 and the city in the 70’s and 80’s during the troubles. An omni present danger that had befallen the people of the city as they went about their daily lives.

The murals subverts the sense of danger by featuring a little girl with a carnivalesque mastiff dog headpiece whilst she plays in the falling confetti.

It’s a playful piece with dark undertones.
