Papaver dubium

Doa Oa is a contemporary street artist from Lugo, Spain, known for her vibrant murals and urban art. Her work often explores themes of nature, femininity, and the intersection of human and environmental elements, blending abstract forms with striking color palettes.

She decided to paint a poppy, more exactly the Papaver dubium. It is very similar to the common poppy, Papaver Rhoeas, but with paler and shorter petals, sometimes with a dark spot at its base. Capsule twice as long as wide, between 1.5 and 2 cm long and between 7 and 9 rays on the disc. It flowers in spring and summer. It is a weed or ruderal plant that grows in crops, disturbed environments, forest clearings, scrubland and pastures from sea level to 1500 m altitude.

These poppies are now growing on a plot of land in the centre of Azagra, where, through @grafitarras, a project has been started for the community use and enjoyment of an unused private space through a temporary transfer contract.

While I was painting, neighbours from Azagra have often come to see the process, they have told me things about living with poppies and sometimes you could also hear in the distance how in small groups they were talking about their experiences with this plant, here I share some of them with you:

Graffitaras is a unique street art project, already it's 6th edition, based in Azagra, Spain, that focuses on promoting female graffiti artists and highlighting women's contributions to urban art. The initiative gathers women artists from various regions to transform public spaces with their vibrant murals, emphasizing themes like gender equality, empowerment, and social justice. Graffitaras seeks to create a platform for creative expression and challenge stereotypes within both the graffiti scene and society at large.
