River Styx

Wist je dat de rivier de Styx door Merksem stroomt? In de Griekse mythologie is de Styx de rivier die de bovenwereld of aarde scheidt van de onderwereld of Hades. Charon was de veerman die de geesten van de overledenen over de Styx vervoerde toen ze vrede wilden vinden in het rijk van Hades. Om hun reis te betalen kregen de doden een muntstuk (obool) in hun mond (wat in films soms wordt afgebeeld met twee gouden munten op de ogen).

Gijs beeldde een van zijn freebirds af als Charon die de rivier oversteekt met een autowrak als boot terwijl de beroemde driekoppige hond Cerberus aan de andere kant wacht.

Tijdens de editie van 2024 van het Mark'Em-festival waren 7 artiesten te gast op een 40 meter lange muur op de parking van de plaatselijke bibliotheek, ze inspiratie vonden in de fantastische wereld van fabels en mythen.

Did you know the river Styx runs through Merksem? In Greek mythology the Styx is the river that separates the upper world or earth from the underworld or Hades. Charon was the ferryman who ferried the ghosts of the deceased across the Styx when they wanted to find peace in the realm of Hades. To pay for their trip the dead were given a coin (obool) in their mouth (which is sometimes depicted in films with two gold coins on the eyes).
Gijs depicted one of his freebirds as Charon crossing the river using a carwreck as boat while the famous 3-headed dog Cerberus waits on the other side.

The 2024 edition of the Mark'Em festival hosted 7 artists on a 40 m long wall on the parking lot of the local library, finding inspiration in the fantastic world of fables and myths.
