Dees is Deurne

Deurne heeft er een verse mural bij, en die draait helemaal rond… shoppen in je eigen buurt. Kunstenaar Artoon zette een jonge vrouw in de spotlight: totebag over de schouder met daarop ‘Dees is wel Deurne’, gevuld met goodies die je meteen herkent uit de Gallifortlei – pralines, een stokbrood, paprika. In haar hand een koffiebeker, net na een stop bij de juwelier. Kortom: een snapshot van hoe veelzijdig lokaal winkelen kan zijn.

Artoon is geen onbekende in de scene. Zijn realistische stijl herken je misschien van The Collector in Berchem of van murals in Gent, Kortrijk en Hasselt. “Het ziet er simpel uit, maar ik speel veel met licht, compositie en detail,” legt hij uit. “Een mural moet gewoon fijn zijn om naar te kijken én tegelijk skills tonen. Dat is hier gelukt.”

Het idee kwam van buurtbewoner Georges de Laat, eigenaar van de muur. Toen hij in 2018 naar de straat verhuisde, stoorde die lege gevel hem meteen. Eerst dacht hij aan een reclamepaneel, maar dat leverde weinig op. “Dan liever iets dat de buurt kleur geeft. Dat dit samen met bewoners en het district is gerealiseerd, maakt het echt af.”

Ook vanuit het district klinkt enthousiasme. Alain Hoeckx (N-VA), schepen van Streetart: “Met de vrolijke kleuren en herkenbare details krijgt de Gallifortlei een warme vibe. We willen mensen zo ook aanmoedigen om lokaal te winkelen. En fun fact: dit is de eerste mural in Deurne die we onder deze legislatuur hebben gerealiseerd met de nieuwe bevoegdheid voor streetart.”

Deurne has a new mural, and it's all about... shopping in your own neighborhood. Artist Artoon spotlighted a young woman: a tote bag slung over her shoulder with the words "Dees is wel Deurne" (This is Deurne), filled with goodies you'll instantly recognize from Gallifortlei—chocolate, a baguette, bell peppers. In her hand, a coffee cup, fresh from a visit to the jewelry store. In short: a snapshot of how versatile local shopping can be.

Artoon is no stranger to the scene. You might recognize his realistic style from The Collector in Berchem or from murals in Ghent, Kortrijk, and Hasselt. "It looks simple, but I play a lot with light, composition, and detail," he explains. "A mural simply has to be pleasant to look at and at the same time showcase skill. That's what we achieved here."

The idea came from local resident Georges de Laat, the wall's owner. When he moved to the street in 2018, the empty facade immediately bothered him. He initially considered a billboard, but that didn't work out. "I'd rather have something that adds color to the neighborhood. The fact that this was created in collaboration with residents and the district really makes it complete."

The district is also enthusiastic. Alain Hoeckx (N-VA), Alderman for Street Art: "The cheerful colors and recognizable details give Gallifortlei a warm vibe. We also want to encourage people to shop locally. And fun fact: this is the first mural in Deurne that we've created under this legislative term with the new authority for street art."
