Growth, de mural die Artoon in 2020 realiseerde in Merksem, ademt precies datgene uit waar de academie waarvoor hij ze maakte zo sterk op inzet: de groei, kracht en rechten van kinderen. Het werk is een schilderkundige vertaling van een sculptuur van Koen Vanmechelen, maar Artoon maakt er duidelijk zijn eigen universum van. De mural straalt een soort zachte energie uit, een beweging die zowel bescherming als ontplooiing suggereert. Je voelt dat het werk wil tonen hoe kinderen, net als jonge organismen, ruimte, zorg en vrijheid nodig hebben om te kunnen groeien.
Artoon schilderde de mural in vijf dagen, een proces dat hij zelf documenteerde in een timelapse die mooi laat zien hoe de compositie laag na laag tot leven komt. De samenwerking met Treepack, Street Art Antwerp en het district Merksem zorgde ervoor dat het werk niet alleen artistiek maar ook maatschappelijk stevig verankerd werd. Door de mural op de gevel van de Merksemse Academie voor Muziek en Woord te plaatsen, krijgt het thema van kinderrechten een zichtbare plek in de publieke ruimte, waar het dagelijks voorbijgangers aanspreekt zonder belerend te worden. Growth is daardoor niet alleen een kunstwerk, maar ook een zachte herinnering aan de verantwoordelijkheid die een gemeenschap draagt voor haar jongste leden.
