San Teodoro's Hippo

Lucamaleonte's artworks combine elements of nature, symbolism, and historical references.

The artist painted the San Teodoro hippopotamus, which is deeply connected to the Acquedolci area.

But what is a hippopotamus doing in Sicily? For those who don't know, Acquedolci is home to the San Teodoro Cave, one of Sicily's most important paleontological sites.

Excavations in the cave have uncovered the island's first burials and, in addition, numerous remains of dwarf hippopotamuses from the Upper Paleolithic.
