Painting in honor of Marquis of Pombal. Sebastião de José Carvalho e Melo was made Marquis because of his dedication to the king, D. José I. The Marquis also commissioned the construction of the prison, which is now the Museum of the Marquis of Pombal, and the barn, which is now the Portuguese Folk Art Museum. He also helped with the reconstruction of Lisbon after the earthquake in 1755.
