Los Colonos de Fuente Palmera

The Colonists of Fuente Palmera is a 20 x 4 metre mural that explores the origins and identity of Fuente Palmera, taking us back to 1767, the year in which the New Settlements of Sierra Morena and Andalusia were founded during the reign of King Charles III, under the direction of Pablo Antonio de Olavide.

The composition begins with the date 1767 and the phrase “History, culture and tradition of a people looking towards the future.” An aged parchment features a reference to the Royal Decree issued by Charles III for the foundation of the New Settlements, accompanied by a wax seal containing a subtle reference to the artist: a letter K incorporated into the shape of a spray can.

The mural continues with Charles III and Pablo Antonio de Olavide, depicted in a three-colour illustrative style and accompanied by the Spanish coat of arms from that period. This graphic treatment deliberately contrasts with the central figure of the mural: a realistically painted female colonist, wearing clothing inspired by that of the first settlers. Her gaze towards the horizon symbolises those who arrived in these lands to begin a new life and build their future.

The scene continues beneath the words “Our roots leave their mark”, where a group of colonists can be seen arriving in Fuente Palmera, pushing and pulling a cart loaded with their belongings. Their journey takes them through cultivated fields towards the town, depicted in the background alongside some of its most recognisable architectural landmarks. The composition is completed by the phrase “We were born with the Fuero for harmony among peoples.”

The colour palette also plays an important role in the narrative. Ochres, yellows, greens and earthy tones evoke the land and its crops, while blues and greys provide a visual reference to mining and the historical past of the surrounding territory. Branches and vegetation, historical documents, landscape, portraiture and illustration are interwoven to create a continuous and harmonious composition.

Completed in just three days, the mural brings together different styles and techniques within a single artwork, paying tribute to the first colonists and remembering, more than two and a half centuries later, the roots upon which the identity of Fuente Palmera was built.
