Mujer / Cáncer de mama

Description

Santa Catalina neighbourhood is home to an artistic treasure that continues to stand the test of time: "Cáncer de mama" (“Breast Cancer”), a mural by the talented artist Lula Goce. Although it was created several years ago, its impact and meaning still resonate deeply within the community.

Spanning a façade of around 400 square metres, the mural was conceived to convey a positive message about the prevention and treatment of breast cancer. Its creator, Lula Goce, originally from Baiona (Pontevedra), highlights the importance of addressing an issue that affects millions of women around the world. For her, this initiative goes beyond art; it is also a way of raising awareness about social and environmental issues that matter deeply to her.

With an artistic career that has taken her to cities such as Barcelona, as well as places including Belgium, Ireland, Sweden and New York, Lula Goce speaks highly of the wonderful initiative led by the Asociación de Comerciantes de Santa Catalina (Santa Catalina Traders' Association). Through art, overlooked corners of the neighbourhood are brought into focus, creating a unique bond between local residents and their surroundings.

The president of the Association, Juan Carlos Quintana, recalls the effort involved in making this mural happen, especially when it came to securing the façade at number 5 Santiago Street, which had previously been used as advertising space by the company Alcampo. Quintana expressed his gratitude to the local residents’ association for giving up that source of income for the benefit of the wider community, highlighting the significant positive change this collaboration brought to the area’s environment and appearance.

Although time moves on, the essence and impact of the artwork remains as a constant reminder of hope and solidarity in Santa Catalina.
