Santa Catalina / Alegoría al Barrio de Santa Catalina

Alegoría a Santa Catalina, la virgen y patrona del barrio que lleva su nombre. Este mural de Nano Lázaro no es sólo una dedicatoria al barrio, pero un registro de su historia y de lo que le representa.

Asentado a orillas del río Arandilla, antes de ser un espacio urbano y vecinal, fue un paraje desnudo en el que sólo había huertas y tierras. Durante un periodo de desarrollo y expansión de la ciudad, el barrio se formó, creciendo y floreciendo como un jardín.

Partiendo de este origen, y con su patrona liderando el conjunto, se representa, en la parte inferior del mural, bloques de edificios que sobresalen como un jardín rodeado de flores y con un buey acostado, representando las labores de labranza. Al fondo, como un paisaje lejano, la silueta del Sistema Central, panorama que se ve desde el barrio.

Encabeza la composición Santa Catalina de Alejandría, pintada como una mujer sabia y valiente que se enfrentó al poder, junto con sus símbolos, la rueda, instrumento de su martirio, la palma, atributo del mártir y la espada con la que fue decapitada. Es rodeada por animales que representan el comercio del barrio, como motor que hace girar esa rueda simbólica. El conjunto sobrevuela el barrio multicultural, avanza, da vida y ofrece diversidad y calidad, a la vez que se implica en asentar un hábitat comercial urbano, agradable y atractivo.

Allegory of Saint Catherine, the virgin and patron saint of the neighborhood that bears her name. Nano Lazaro's mural is not only a tribute to the neighborhood, but also a record of its history and of the elements that define its identity.

Located on the banks of the Arandilla River, before becoming an urban and residential space, the area was once a bare landscape where only vegetable gardens and farmland existed. During a period of growth and expansion of the city, the neighborhood gradually took shape, growing and flourishing like a garden.

Drawing on this origin, and with its patron saint leading the composition, the lower part of the mural depicts blocks of buildings rising like a garden surrounded by flowers, along with a resting ox that represents agricultural labor. In the background, shown as a distant landscape, appears the silhouette of the Central System mountain range, a panorama visible from the neighborhood.

Heading the composition is Saint Catherine of Alexandria, portrayed as a wise and courageous woman who stood up to power, accompanied by her traditional symbols: the wheel, the instrument of her martyrdom; the palm, the emblem of martyrs; and the sword by which she was beheaded. She is surrounded by animals representing the neighborhood’s commerce, acting as the driving force that turns this symbolic wheel. The entire scene hovers over the multicultural neighborhood, moving forward, giving life, and offering diversity and quality, while also contributing to the creation of a pleasant and attractive urban commercial environment.
